Mindless Following

•April 12, 2007 • 2 Comments

Many people today follow pig type leaders. I myself have followed pig type leaders.  I used to follow the rules to the point where I never did anything wrong and never had any fun.  I didnt realize that when you follow the rules to the exact thing, everything is really boring and never changes.  I’m not saying that we should break rules but that you shouldn’t obey them to where you are always thinking is this going to get me in trouble, or is this against the rules.  I used to never go near the line that the rules set. Now I get a lot closer to that line and I am much happier now.  I was mislead by the rules.

The Trial

I think the trial was a fun but stressful project.  I really liked how we had to compete against each other which made me want to work harder.  I didn’t like how some people didn’t put as much effort into it as others, especially when they could have done a really good job because their book supported their side so well.  I think that we should have had only two books to do, one supporting your side and one cross examination so that we can focus more on those two and do a better job.

Homework 2/15 Mayella and Tom

•February 15, 2007 • 1 Comment

Tom and Mayella are both Mockingbirds in To Kill a Mockingbird.  They both, to a point, do not harm other people; Mayella is mostly at home by herself and Tom has helped her out and not done much harm to anyone.  Tom is being hurt by being wrongly accused in this trial because he is black. He has never done anything to wrong the Ewells, he has actually helped them out in many ways without getting a payment; yet they accuse him of rape anyway. Mayella is abused by her father and possibly her brothers as well.  They are both mockingbirds that are being hurt.

Tom and Mayella are both mockingbirds, but they are different in the type of mockingbird.  Tom is the type of Mockingbird that has helped out people, been kind to people, and has only brought good to Maycomb county.  The only reason he is being hurt is because he is black.  Mayella  is abused by her family and has had a bad childhood.  Her father is a drunk and does nothing to help her or uplift her.  She is also abused by her father who has hurt hurt her in many different ways.  She is also very lonely because no one wants to be around the Ewells because of the way they are, so she has no friends.  She is a mockingbird because she is unable to do anything that will get her out of the situation she is in because there is nowhere she can go to get away from it all.  She will probably be stuck with taking care of her father for the rest of her life.  Her father has ruined her childhood and perhaps the rest of her life.

Tom and Mayella are each mockingbirds that are being wrongly hurt and accused.  They have no way of controlling what they will do because Tom is black and Mayella has a drunk father.

Homework 2/8

I think that Scout is acting in her character when she saves Atticus from the mob because she is young and childish at this part of the book. She is only eight years old. She does not expect the people to even think about hurting Atticus, she thinks that every person is a good person and she has yet to see the corruption in the world.

Any child at the age of eight would not expect people to be out to harm them or their father, neither does Scout.  She is an innocent girl who does not know better, just like any other child.  First, she does not think they are their to hurt Atticus and Tom.  Also, these people are all her friends and she knows them all from around town, many of them being parents of the friends she has at school. She waves, smiles, and says hi to all of them politely, doing exactly as an eight year old child would do. We know that she had know idea that they were there to harm people because she would not have walked in there with all of the people holding guns and weapons.  If she had know they were going to hurt people she would have stayed away and been scared, but she was did not do that.

Scout shows childish acts from when they played Boo Radley and acted out other plays.  Also, being young, she would not have had enough experiences to see the corruption in the world and in people.  She had no clue what racialism was and did not see that most white people hate black people and most black people hate white people.  She also shows immaturity when she asks Calpurnia why she talks differently at church than when she is working at the house.  She also does not see the hate between black and white because when she goes to Calpurnia’s church everyone is nice to her.  She is acting in her character when she saves Atticus.

Homework-2/1

Mockingbirds are the center of the book because Tom Robinson is like a Mockingbird.  He has done no harm to anyone and he minds his own buisness, but people hurt him.  Mockingbirds just sing for us and make nice noise, so it is pointless to kill them because you don’t gain anything for doing it.  Boo Radley is also like a Mockingbird because bothering him running up to his house and sneaking up at night only makes him more shy, all he does is sit in his house and leave people completely alone.

When Scout and Uncle Jack get in an argument Jack is ready to hit and rebuke Scout right at the start.  He does not take the time to think how Scout must feel after her friends were making fun of her; when he does think about it he sees that he should have been less harsh.  We should think before we act and try and figure out what other people are thinking before we do anything.

Homework due 1/25

Jem, Scout, and Dill are all kids who hang out in the summer, with Jem and Scout being brother and sister.  They normally make up plays and act them out, but they have gotten bored of doing that, so they have taken an interest in Boo Radley, who is their mysterious neighbor.  I think that Boo Radley will be their friend because he left them the stuff in the tree.  I think that in the end he will save their lives when they get attacked.  I think he represents seeing things from other people’s point of view because I think he sits in his house and looks out because he saw when Scout rolled into his yard in the tire.

To Kill a Mockingbird

•January 22, 2007 • 1 Comment

I think that it is about not killing something that does no harm to anyone, like a mockingbird.  I think that To kill a Mockingbird is about a black man being accused of rape, but he is really innocent. I think there will be a lot of racism and unfairness going on. I think that it is about a man standing up against everyone and helping one innocent man because it is the right thing to do.  I think there will be some killing and mean things said to people. I also think that there will be a daughter who does not understand why her father is helping out the black man but in the end she will.  I think that there will be a man who is very racial and hates the black man, and he accuses him of raping his daughter.  I also expect the black man to be like a mocking brid and not harm people and not even bother people.  He just minds his own buisness, but then the racial man comes a long is is just looking for trouble.  In the end i think he will die while trying to kill the lawyers children, but they will be saved by their reclusive neighbor. I think that the people in the town will not ever hear what will happen, but everything will turn out ok.
